In August 1920, a month after the piano piece begun as a “Tombeau for Debussy,“ Schönberg sketched ideas for an ensemble work. The combination of violin, clarinet, and guitar recalled the kind of open-air music that was popular at the local wine taverns of Vienna and Mödling. On a sketch, the clarinet plays a theme that consists of two times fourteen tones, the second part of which is a retrograde version of the first fourteen. Under that he wrote an inversion of the same theme, as well as isolated melodic figures that were derived from segments of the sequence, abstracted into a tone row.
